Contemporary family garden design in Harpenden

 Garden before construction

This garden, in the same development as the Small Traditional Garden had the same blank canvas but presented a very different challenge.

These clients wanted a space for adult entertaining, a large flat lawn, a dedicated play area for their two small children, a home-office cum play room and, if possible, a place to sit and catch the afternoon sun. Moreover, the garden and plants needed to reflect the contemporary styling of the house’s interior and be easily maintained.

To accomodate all these desires, yet create the feeling of uncluttered space, required careful planning. Raised beds divide the various areas and retain the slope of the land. A beautiful hardwood deck takes the house floor level out into the spacious, external dining area.

Sketch of design proposal

Hand-crafted, clay pavers edge the lawn and make a fine path from the deck to the home-office and adjacent paved patio.

This afternoon-sun-space leads onto the children’s play area. Golden bamboos soften the play equipment, viewed from the rest of the garden.

At night an internally lit spherical water feature lights the dining area. It looks as if the moon has landed in the adjacent bed and gives gentle sound and movement to the garden.

"The garden is everything we wanted it to be and more."
